Tutorial 3:
In this Tutorial we will create an artwork that has elements that bleed off the page. We will explain the different Printers Terms and how that applies to any document that we create for printing. We will import a Graphics Image created in
Inkscape Tutorial Number 6. I exported the artwork from Inkscape at 300 dpi and saved it as a .png file. PNG files are great for Graphics, they have no distortion and have a transparent background.
You can Download the file HERE. You will also need an SVG Vector Graphic file also created in Inkscape.
You can Download this file HERE.

Have a look at the diagram on the left.
The Blue line represents the edge of the page or the trim area. After the document is printed the Printer will use the trim lines to cut the page to its finished size.
Notice the magenta area indicates an Image that extends beyond the trim area. This is called Bleeding off the page. The reason for this is that we want the image to go right to the edge of the page after it is trimmed.
The Orange line shows the Bleed area.
The green border represents the Print area, this is the area where text can be placed.
The fold lines show the printer where to fold the document after printing.
Step 1:
Open Scribus and start a new Blank Document.
In the New Document Dialog box (refer below far right).
Select The A4 Option as the page size.
Set the Orientation to Landscape.
Set the Default unit to Millimeters.
Set all four Margin Guides to 5mm and then Press the OK button and your page should appear like the one below.
Note that the margin area is the same as the Print area in the Diagram on the left.
Step 2:
Next I would like you to choose Insert > Shape from the main menu and drag out a shape as I have on the Right. Notice that the shape extends approx 3mm beyond the page border. Don't worry about the Color and the exact size, we will set those next.
Step 3:
Right Click on the new shape and choose Properties to bring up the Property dialog.
Once the dialog has opened click on the Colors tab.
I have chosen the color Light Goldenrod as in the Image on the left
Next click on the XYZ tab to set the size and position of the shape. As you can see below, by setting an X and Y position of minus 3mm I have placed two of the Shapes sides outside the page border (trim area) by 3mm . I also gave it a width and Height of 130mm by 150mm
Next click on the Line option on the Properties tab and set the Line width to Zero as in the Image on the right.
Step 4:
From the main menu choose Insert > Image Frame and position it on the page over the top of the Shape as I have below.
Next right click on the Image frame and choose Get Image. Choose the SwampFoot Image you have downloaded. Your page should now look like the one below.
Step 5:
From the main menu choose Insert > Text Frame and Drag out an area as I have below.
Right click on the Text Frame and choose Edit Text from the Pop up menu.
i changed the Type Face to Aachen BT Bold. I changed the Point size to 76 and I changed the Color to Dark Green. Type in the Text SWAMP FOOT IT TASTES LIKE IT SOUNDS and click the Cent re button to Center the Text.
When you have finished click the Green Tick at the top of the dialog box.
The Text on your page should look like that below.
Don't worry we can fix this. Right click on the Text box and choose the Properties Dialog.
Click on the Text Tab.
Adjust the distance between the lines and Letters using these Tools.
You can see the results Live as you make adjustments.
Keep adjusting until your Text looks like that on the Left
Step 6:
Next we will import a Vector Graphic File called ColdAndWet.svg created in Inkscape. Vector Graphics are Salable and have perfect sharp Resolution. When Scribus saves or exports the file as a PDF, it keep all of the Vector elements as Vector Graphics thus making a smaller file.
From the main menu choose File > Import > Import SVG
Import the ColdAndWet.svg file. You may get a little dialog saying the imported file may have unsupported features. That is because Scribus does not support all of the elements possible for inclusion in Inkscape. Click the OK button as this file is fine and drag the Image on the Page.
You can Scale the Cold and Wet Vector Graphics by dragging the control handles(little red squares on the border around the Image) whilst holding down the Left Mouse button. Arrange the Image until it appears as the one on the right.
Save your file and then export it as a PDF and it should look like the Image below when viewed in your favorite PDF viewer..
