Tutorial 2:
In Tutorial 2 we will continue to develop the Project created in Tutorilal1 and learn the different ways of completing a Project for final Publication. You will naturally have had to complete
Tutorial 1 before starting this Tutorial. Before completing this Tutorial
please visit our Color Page and download and install the Adobe Color Profiles.
Step 1:
Open the Custom Rods file created in Tutorial 1.
Click on the Text Frame on the bottom half of the page and then Click the right mouse button and choose Properties to bring up the Properties dialog.
We are going to add a Color background to the Text Frame.
At the bottom of the Properties dialog click on the Colors Tab.
I have chosen Antique White as you can see in the Image on the right.
Step 2:
Next click on the Shape tab in the Properties dialog. We are going to adjust the text so as it does not extend to the edge of the Text Frame.
Under the Distance of Text settings I set a Gap between the columns of 6mm. I then set 1mm at the top 3mm at the bottom and 3mm for both the Left and Right
Your Text Frame should look like the Image on the right.
Step 3:
I then applied some fine tune adjustments to the text in the middle of the page. Right click on the Text Frame to bring up the Properties dialog and then click on the Text tab.
Use the two tabs in the Image above to adjust the spacing between the text lines and the spacing between the letters.
Step 4:
Now we can look at the different ways of saving this file and preparing it for publication. Make sure you save your current work first.
Then click the Preflight verifier on the main menu.
The dialog opens up with a General Tab as the Image on the Left.
Set the destination to your Custom Rods folder.
Set the Compatibility to PDF/X-3, this is the internationally recognized standard for Offset Print Quality. Note how the resolution for Graphics is set to 300dpi
Next click on the Fonts Tab as the Image below. Here you can choose to embed the Fonts you have used within the PDF file. This is an important step because your printer may not have the Fonts you have used installed on his machine.
Click on the Color Tab and you will see the Color dialog as below and note that I have chosen the sRGB IEC6 1966-2.1 Rather than the default profile which was my scanner. There is also a profile for my Digital camera. The images on this page however were not crated by either my Scanner or my Digital camera, that's why I have chosen the sRGB profile.
Next Click on the PDF/X-3 tab as on the right and choose an output profile that your Offset Printer prefers.
Don't forget to place a name or information in the Info String.
Then Click to Save button to create the PDF file.
You will note that the file created is over 12 meg in size, this is because we have created a high quality CMYK file.
Before completing the next step please make sure you have visited our
Color Page and download and installed the Adobe Color Profiles.
Now you have done that click on the Pdf icon on the main menu at the top of the page
This little Dialog tells you if you have a problem with your page that may cause an error. It will name the part of the Page that is in error and give you an opportunity to correct the fault. As you can see we have no problems so we can proceed to the next step.
Now if you view the file in your favorite PDF viewer you will see the document exactly as the printer will.
Step 5:
Now Imagine that you work in an Office as part of a Team and you want to send this Page to another colleague to add his or her contribution. They also have Scribus installed on their computer. You need to make sure that you send them all the necessary files.
Firstly you will need to create a folder to place the files in. I created a folder in C:/Temp called Custom Rods.
Next Click on File > Collect for Output from the main menu
A dialog will appear asking you to choose a directory. Choose the directory you have just created and then click the OK button.
Below you can see the folder with the files in it that Scribus has copied. You can burn these files to a disk or copy them onto a memory stick. All your original files are still on your Hard Drive in your Jobs Folder. This method ensures that all the correct files are packaged and also you don't run the risk of accidentally deleting or moving the Original Files.
